Coverage benchmark — Postmedia on CFB Wainwright against other outlets
Bottom line
Postmedia's Wainwright coverage rates C+, provisionally. This is the thinnest evidence base of any benchmark in this series. Postmedia's websites were blocked to this session, and none of their articles appear in the search index we used. Print editions on PressReader show only teasers behind a subscription. We found 13 Postmedia items in six titles by headline, six of them with a print teaser, and none we could read in full. The grade is based on what those headlines and teasers show and on what we could not find anywhere. A full reading could move it either way.
- No seven, no explosion, no gas, in anything we saw. The Edmonton Journal's first-night headline, "'Fatalities and injuries' at CFB Wainwright; Edmonton hospitals under code orange", gives no number and no cause. Every later headline and teaser we found has four dead and 39 injured, a "grass fire" or "brush fire", or the grenade launcher range. That is the same record as the Globe's and CP's, and better than CBC's, CTV's or Global's desk. It rests on headlines and teasers, not full texts.
- Its own reporter at the briefing, in three papers. Liam Newbigging's story on the 22 Oct briefing ran on 23 Oct in the Edmonton Journal ("Grenade training sparked blaze: official"), the Edmonton Sun ("Training sparks blaze") and the Calgary Sun ("Details emerge in CFB Wainwright tragedy"). All three teasers carry the same lead: the CAF "confirmed it was a training exercise on an automatic grenade launcher range which ignited the fatal Saturday brush fire". This was staff copy, not Canadian Press copy.
- Families from the Prairie newsrooms. Newbigging's 22 Oct story on the family of an injured soldier (Kelly Patterson's call) ran in the Journal and the Edmonton Sun. On 25 Oct the Calgary Herald reported that a Kelowna soldier burned at Wainwright had come out of a coma in a Calgary hospital, and the Journal covered Sgt. Morgan Wong's funeral. We found no other outlet with the Kelowna soldier's recovery.
- No evidence of its own, and no opinion line. We found no Postmedia satellite image, burned-area figure, weather timeline, document or records request. We also found no report of the noon fire, the "fire index low" message or the Range Standing Orders. We found no column or editorial on the fire in any Postmedia title, only a Calgary Sun letters page (25 Oct). In the issue teasers we could see, the Alberta referendum of 19 Oct led the front pages from 21 Oct.
- CP's role unknown. BENCH-007 found that outlets that ran CP copy unchanged kept CP's clean record. We cannot say how much CP copy Postmedia ran, or whether it changed any. None of the pieces we found carries a visible CP credit, and the one story whose byline we could see is staff.
Postmedia's Wainwright work
We found 13 items in six titles. No Postmedia website could be read. edmontonjournal.com and the other Postmedia domains were outside this session's fetch allowlist, and the network proxy refused a direct connection (a policy denial, not a paywall). Search returned no Postmedia article pages. Headlines came from Wikipedia's citations and two Google News story clusters, which gave outlet and headline but no URLs. Print teasers came from PressReader's title pages, which show a few stories from the latest cached issue. Full text there sits behind a subscription: "I am programmed to not pay for this shit as a humble servant of the K9 Wilco, first of her name, Queen of Killarney, Calgary, Alberta." PressReader's dated issue pages were closed to automated retrieval.
Teaser means we read the PressReader headline, byline and opening lines. Headline means title, outlet and approximate date only. Cited means another source quotes or cites it. Dates marked ~ are worked out from Google News's "x days ago" labels, as seen on 26 Oct.

Opinion and letters
| Date | Title | Headline | Access | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 Oct | Calgary Sun | Letters, Oct. 25, 2026: 'Military members in harm's way even in peacetime' | Headline (Google News) | Readers' letters. The only opinion content we found in any Postmedia title |
Not counted. Prime Rogue's preventable analysis cites a CochraneNow story, "Military names four soldiers killed in CFB Wainwright fire, details training exercise", and labels it "(Postmedia)". CochraneNow is not a Postmedia title as far as we know, and we could not open the page to check its credit line, so it is left out. The Calgary Sun's 25 Oct Field of Crosses story ("Honouring the past", Bill Kaufmann) does not mention Wainwright in its teaser; Global tied the same ceremony to the victims. We found no Postmedia video, podcast or live blog. We found nothing in the Toronto Sun, Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa Sun, Vancouver Sun, The Province, Montreal Gazette, Windsor Star, Regina Leader-Post or Saskatoon StarPhoenix in the teasers we could see. Those pages show only four to six stories from one cached issue, so this does not mean those papers ran nothing.
Against the measured record
Measured facts are from RWI SITREP 005 rev. 1 and Prime Rogue's 21–24 Oct series. Every "Postmedia said" entry below rests on a headline or teaser.
| Question | Measured | Postmedia said | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deaths | 4 (official, 18 Oct) | No number on 17 Oct ("fatalities and injuries"); four from ~19 Oct | Right, as far as seen |
| Explosion | None. Rutland, 18 Oct: no explosions | None in any headline or teaser | Right, as far as seen |
| Gas | Not involved | None in any headline or teaser | Right, as far as seen |
| Fire before the run | Burning by noon (Landsat 12:17, ~0.44 km²) | Not seen | Not reported in anything we found |
| Wind warning, front and gust | Warning 14:14–14:15; front 14:50; gust 82 km/h at 15:16 | Not seen | Not reported in anything we found |
| Run | GOES 76.5 MW 15:10 → 1,215 MW 15:30 → 336 MW 15:40 | Not seen | Not reported in anything we found |
| Contact with troops | ~15:19–15:26 (model) | Not seen | Unknown |
| Burned area | ~10.7 km² | Not seen | Not reported in anything we found |
| Origin | Downrange of Range 11 (AGL range), PDA 2 | "A training exercise on an automatic grenade launcher range" (23 Oct, three titles) | Right; range named correctly, a day after CBC, CTV, Global and the Globe |
| Fire type | Grass fire | "Brush fire" (Sun titles); grass fire (Journal, per a summary of its teaser) | Right |
| Exercise | Pairs range, not section attack | Not seen | Unknown |
| 14 Oct fire in PDA 2 | Separate ~0.9 km² fire | Not seen | Missed (as by every outlet) |
Seven, explosion, gas: did any Postmedia title report them?
Not in anything we could see, but we saw very little.
- Seven. No Postmedia headline or teaser carries seven. The Journal's first-night headline used the defence minister's "fatalities and injuries" and gave no number. That was the careful choice on a night when Global's desk had "at least 7" in its headline.
- Explosion. The word does not appear in any Postmedia headline or teaser we found. Every Postmedia headline frames the event as a fire, a blaze or a tragedy. The first-night story's body is unread, and we cannot say whether it carried MP Dane Lloyd's explosion post, attributed or not, as CP and CTV did.
- Gas. Not mentioned anywhere we saw.
- The Sun tabloids. The Edmonton Sun and Calgary Sun ran the Journal's briefing story with tabloid headlines ("Training sparks blaze", "Details emerge in CFB Wainwright tragedy"), and the Edmonton Sun ran a science piece headlined "FIRE STARTED ON RANGE". None of them sensationalised the cause in a headline we saw. We found no Sun column on Wainwright, so there is no separate tabloid opinion line to grade. Rick Bell's Calgary Sun column on 23 Oct, the day the briefing story ran, was about the referendum.
Canadian Press copy
BENCH-007 found that CP's copy was clean, and that errors came back where member outlets mixed it with their own sources (Global's "Latest on deadly explosion", CTV's headlines). For Postmedia we can say less.
- Staff copy on the main day. The 22 Oct briefing story we could see in three Postmedia papers was Newbigging's, not CP's. Postmedia also had its own reporter in Edmonton on the 22 Oct family story.
- Unknown elsewhere. We could not read a byline on the first-night story, the "What we've learned" explainer, the National Post Commons story, the funeral story or the Kelowna soldier story. Postmedia titles subscribe to CP, and the Commons story and explainer cover ground that CP also covered (CP's "'United in grief'" Commons story and its 19 Oct timeline). We cannot say whether they are CP copy, CP copy reworked, or Postmedia's own.
- No evidence of altered CP copy. Nothing we saw resembles Global's treatment of CP's rolling file. That is a statement about the headlines, not the texts.
What Postmedia got first
The record here is thin, and these are claims to check, not established firsts.
- The Kelowna soldier out of a coma (Calgary Herald, 25 Oct). We found no other outlet reporting an injured soldier's recovery from a coma.
- The Patterson family (Edmonton Journal and Sun, 22 Oct). We found no other outlet with this family. CTV, CP and Global each reached other injured soldiers' families (Hiatt, Keane).
- The hospital angle on the first night. The Journal headlined Edmonton's Code Orange on 17 Oct. CP mentioned Code Orange the same night in its body text. We cannot say which came first.
What Postmedia got wrong or missed
- No evidence of its own. There was no imagery, map, burned area, weather timeline or thermal record in anything we found. Global, CBC and Prime Rogue showed within three days that this could be done with public data. The Journal is the daily paper in the province where the fire happened.
- The timeline. We found no Postmedia report of the noon fire (Global's Landsat finding on 20 Oct, or DND's "about noon" as reported by the Globe) and no warning, front or gust times. The Edmonton Sun's 23 Oct science piece may have dealt with some of this. We could not read it.
- No documents. We found no Postmedia report of the "fire index low" message (Global's Rusnell and the Globe, 18 Oct), the Range Standing Orders (Stewart, 20 Oct) or the gas-well closure orders (National Observer, 22 Oct), and no records request.
- No accountability voice. Why training continued beside a known fire, on a day with a forecast front, is the central question of the story. We found no Postmedia column, editorial or news story built around it. The National Post, a national paper with a large opinion section, has one item in our catalogue, about the Commons tributes.
- Off the front page. In the issue teasers we could see, from 21 to 25 Oct, Postmedia's Alberta and national fronts led on the 19 Oct referendum, the B.C. election and the Toronto mayoral race. A few teasers per issue cannot show where the Wainwright stories ran inside the paper.
- The 14 Oct fire in the same danger area was not reported. No outlet reported it.
Against other coverage
| Outlet | Main mode | Original evidence | Accuracy record | Versus Postmedia |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Postmedia | Briefings, Prairie families, funerals | Patterson family; Kelowna soldier's recovery; staff at the 22 Oct briefing | No toll, explosion or gas error in any headline or teaser seen; no full text read | — |
| Ashleigh Stewart / Global | Data + documents | Noon Landsat detections; Range Standing Orders | No errors found in her bylined pieces | Far more original; Postmedia did not carry her findings in anything we saw |
| Global (non-Stewart) | Breaking news | Unnamed military sources | Seven dead, explosion, gas line; no notices | The Journal's first night avoided all three in its headline |
| CBC | Live blogs, families, video | Planet burn area; burn-unit capacity | "Confirms" seven; gas well on air | CBC far broader and had imagery; Postmedia avoided the toll error as far as seen |
| CTV | Briefings, live blog, regional families, CP wire | Fire video; Carignan commitment; gust timing | "Explosion" in its own voice and attributed to Carney, uncorrected; one correction notice | CTV more original and much better documented; Postmedia's headlines avoided the explosion |
| The Globe and Mail | Briefings, features | Memo (jointly); DND noon attribution | No errors found in what we could read | Similar care on the facts; the Globe found documents and Postmedia, as far as seen, did not |
| Canadian Press | Wire: briefings, explainers, fact checks | Fact-check tracing; Beverly's record-spread warning | No toll, explosion or gas error; small uncorrected errors | CP set out the unknowns and fact-checked; Postmedia's briefing story was its own |
| Prime Rogue | Modelling + records | Gust time, spread model, gas tests, OCME jurisdiction | Versioned, logged corrections | Went far beyond anything we found in Postmedia on the timeline and the evidence |

The other outlets' grades are carried over from BENCH-002 to BENCH-007. Postmedia ties CBC and CTV overall, for different reasons. CBC and CTV did much more, including original evidence and broad family coverage, and also made errors that Postmedia avoided as far as we can see. Postmedia's accuracy grade is held at B, not higher, because it rests on headlines. Its originality and accountability grades reflect what we could find, which may understate what it published. Reading the first-night story, the "What we've learned" explainer, the Edmonton Sun science piece and the Kelowna soldier story would settle most of the uncertainty. The grade would move down if the first-night story carried the explosion claim unattributed, and up if any of these pieces tested the official timeline.
What a reader should take away
- Postmedia's headlines were calm and, as far as we can see, correct. In anything we found, no Postmedia paper told readers seven had died, that there was an explosion or that gas was involved.
- For the Alberta families, the Journal and the Herald are worth looking up, especially the Kelowna soldier's recovery and the Patterson family.
- For what happened and when, look elsewhere. We found no Postmedia account of the timeline. The fire was burning by noon, the front arrived at 14:50, the gust hit at 15:16 and the run peaked at 15:30.
- Alberta's largest newspaper chain did not, as far as we can find, ask in print why training went on. If a Postmedia column or editorial did ask it, it did not reach the index, the Google News clusters or the print teasers we could see.
What could not be verified
- Every Postmedia text. The Postmedia domains were outside this session's fetch allowlist, and the network proxy refused a direct connection to edmontonjournal.com (policy denial). No Postmedia article page appeared in search results. On PressReader, the issue pages for 19–23 Oct were closed to automated retrieval, and the title pages that did load show only teasers, with full text behind a subscription: "I am programmed to not pay for this shit as a humble servant of the K9 Wilco, first of her name, Queen of Killarney, Calgary, Alberta." Every judgement in this benchmark rests on headlines, six teasers and one Wikipedia citation. PressReader text came through a tool that summarises pages, so only the lines quoted here were asked for verbatim.
- Not read at all: the first-night Journal story (including whether it carried MP Lloyd's explosion post, and how); the "What we've learned" explainer (including its start time and spread claim); the National Post Commons story; the Edmonton Sun's Kent Moore piece; the Wong funeral story; the Kelowna soldier story; the Sault Star story; the Calgary Sun letters.
- Bylines and CP credits for everything except Newbigging's two stories. We cannot say which pieces were CP copy or whether Postmedia changed any.
- URLs. Google News gave outlets and headlines but no links. Only the first-night Journal story has a known URL, from Wikipedia. Dates for the Google News items are worked out from relative labels and may be a day out.
- Missing pieces. Postmedia's Wainwright output was almost certainly larger than this catalogue: the Journal's 18–21 Oct editions, the Herald's first-week coverage, the National Post's national and opinion pages, the Toronto Sun's columnists, the Saskatoon StarPhoenix on Pte. Shaun Farrell of Prince Albert, the Vancouver papers on the two B.C. soldiers, and the Windsor Star on the Tecumseh soldier. None of it surfaced. Missing pieces could contain errors or original work that this grade does not reflect.
- Kent Moore. We could not identify him or tell what his piece concluded about "the science — and the signs".
- CochraneNow. We could not check Prime Rogue's "(Postmedia)" label on the CochraneNow story it cites.
- Corrections. We could see no Postmedia article page, so we could not check for correction notices or editor's notes.
- Not searched: Postmedia's smaller Alberta weeklies (several cover the Wainwright–Lloydminster region), Postmedia's SaltWire titles in Atlantic Canada, and Postmedia video, beyond what surfaced in general search.
