Coverage benchmark — Global News on CFB Wainwright beyond Ashleigh Stewart, against other outlets
Bottom line
Global News's Wainwright coverage outside Ashleigh Stewart's bylines rates D+. This confirms the D+ that BENCH-002 gave the first night, now on a full review. Global was quick, and its regional stations covered the dead soldiers' home towns. But nearly every error that travelled abroad came from one Global story, and Global never corrected any of them in public.
- Three wrong claims on the first night. The 17 Oct story by Karen Bartko and Jeff Semple, based on unnamed military sources, reported at least seven dead, an explosion, and a live-fire exercise that had hit a gas line or gas well. The official toll was four. The army commander said on 18 Oct that no explosion occurred. The military said gas infrastructure was not involved.
- No correction notice. The gas-line wording was later taken out of the first-night story without a note. The headline still reads "At least 7 dead, dozens injured in explosion and fire at CFB Wainwright: Sources", and the body still says seven died "in the blast and fire". The only editor's note says the story "contains initial breaking news details" and links to newer coverage.
- The explosion stayed in later stories. It was repeated in the 18 Oct condolences story, Bartko's 18 Oct explainer and the 19 Oct "Everything confirmed so far" timeline, and in video titles. The timeline still gives "approximately 4:00 p.m." as the time the fire began.
- The desk did not use Stewart's findings. No desk story after 20 Oct reports that the fire was burning by noon. The 22 Oct investigation story uses the standing-orders guidance she obtained but does not credit her reporting.
- Good where it was local. Global's stations in B.C., Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Edmonton covered the families. On 23 Oct Global had the account of the critically injured medic, Cpl. Liam Keane, from his mother. CTV Barrie reported a Keane son critically injured on 18 Oct; whether that is the same soldier is not confirmed.
Global's Wainwright work, excluding Stewart
This list covers 17 text items and 22 videos. We found them through Global's CFB Wainwright tag page (which says 11 more stories exist but would not load them), web search and wire pickups. We could fetch only some pages directly (see What could not be verified). "Not retrieved" means we know the headline and URL but could not read the text. Michelle Semple: no Global byline by that name turned up. The first-night co-byline is Jeff Semple. Stewart's two bylined analyses (20 Oct) are graded in BENCH-002 and left out here. One story she shares a byline on (condolences, 18 Oct) is listed because it repeats the desk's explosion wording. It does not count toward her grade.

Against the measured record
The measured facts come from RWI SITREP 005 rev. 1 and Prime Rogue's 21–24 Oct series.
| Question | Measured | Global (non-Stewart) said | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deaths | 4 (official, 18 Oct) | "At least seven", military sources (17 Oct). Still in the headline and body on 26 Oct | Wrong; never corrected |
| Explosion | None. Rutland on 18 Oct: no explosions occurred (CBC live blog) | Munition "sparked a … grass fire, which caused an explosion" (17 Oct); repeated 18 and 19 Oct and in video titles | Wrong; never withdrawn |
| Gas | Not involved (military, 18 Oct); no sign in satellite or regulator records | First version: the exercise "hit a gas line or gas well … causing an explosion". 18 Oct: restated with Rutland's doubt. 22 Oct: "not involved" | Wrong at first; removed without a note; later reported correctly |
| Fire before the run | Burning by noon (Landsat 12:17, ~0.44 km²) | Timeline: fire began "at approximately 4:00 p.m." Desk never reported the noon finding | Relayed the official time; left standing after Stewart's 20 Oct analysis |
| Front and run | Front 14:50; gust 82 km/h at 15:16; GOES 76.5 MW 15:10 → 1,215 MW 15:30 → 336 MW 15:40 | "Sudden wind shift" in the afternoon; 100 km/h warning; spread in "30 to 60 seconds" | Relayed; no times; spread claim untested |
| Contact with troops | ~15:19–15:26 (model) | Around 4 p.m. (officials) | Relayed |
| Burned area | ~10.7 km² | Not reported by the desk | Missed |
| Origin | Downrange of Range 11 (AGL range), PDA 2 | AGL range, permanent danger area (22 Oct) | Right; same day as CBC and CTV |
| Exercise | Pairs range, not section attack | Section attack at first; pairs-range correction carried 22 Oct | Right once corrected |
| 14 Oct fire in PDA 2 | Separate ~0.9 km² fire | Not reported | Missed (as by every outlet) |
Corrections: seven deaths, the explosion and the gas line
This is the main question for this review, because these claims spread furthest.
- The gas line was edited out without a note. The Canadian Press fact check (20 Oct) quotes Global's original wording: the exercise "hit a gas line or gas well on the base, causing an explosion". It notes Global later changed this to the munition-and-grass-fire wording. Wire pickups on 18 Oct have the original. Keystone-SDA: "This led to an explosion, 'Global News' reported". Militarnyi: "a munition struck a gas pipeline or gas well". ZeroHedge used the headline "Live-Fire Drill Sparks Massive Gas Explosion At Canadian Base, Killing 7". The story as it stands has no correction line. The only acknowledgement is in Bartko's 18 Oct explainer, which says military sources told Global this "on Saturday night" and sets it against Rutland's doubt. It reads as a second report, not a correction.
- The explosion was never withdrawn. Rutland said on 18 Oct that no explosions occurred. Global did not report that. Its stories of 18 and 19 Oct still refer to "Saturday's explosion" and "caused an explosion". The condolences story puts the claim in the reporter's own voice with no source. The CBC and CTV first-night headlines also used "explosion" or "serious incident", but only Global attached a cause and a mechanism to it.
- Seven deaths is still the headline. Carney's figure of four was added to the body, and the TV clip's title was changed to "At least 4 dead", but the article headline and the sentence "at least seven people died in the blast and fire" remain. Wikipedia still cites the story for "initial reports by Global News and CBC News" of seven.
- What Global did right. The 22 Oct desk story reports that natural gas infrastructure was not involved, and carries the pairs-range correction. It does not say Global had reported otherwise.
CBC's seven-death error (BENCH-003) reached more readers through Reuters. Global's error covered more ground: three claims instead of one, picked up by Swiss, Ukrainian and Ghanaian outlets and by sites that promoted the gas-explosion story. Neither outlet published a correction notice that we could find.
How the desk used Stewart's work
Little, as far as the published record shows.
- Stewart is credited ("with files from") on the 18 Oct victims, explainer and Commons stories, and shares the condolences byline. Those all came before her analyses.
- After her 20 Oct satellite analysis showed the fire burning by about noon, no desk story repeated it. The 19 Oct timeline, which still says the fire began around 4:00 p.m., was not updated.
- The 22 Oct investigation story cites the standing orders' "plan early morning shoots" guidance and Rutland's "That's a guideline". It does not credit Global's own reporting for the orders.
- A Global video is titled "Defence minister responds to reports CAF was advised not to conduct fire training". We could not watch it to see whose reports it means.
The two strands ran separately. Stewart's work was the evidence; the desk's work was the briefings.
What Global got first
Excluding Stewart, there is little.
- The medic's story. Cpl. Liam Keane's account, from his mother's statement to Global (23 Oct), was the most detailed account of an injured soldier we found outside CBC's burn-unit story.
- The commander's doubt about gas, on the record, on 18 Oct. Bartko's explainer was among the first stories to publish Rutland's "Initial impression is it's not". Prime Rogue's gas analysis relies on that quote.
- "Did not start inside the training area." Global's 19 Oct timeline reported Rutland saying this. Prime Rogue cites it.
- Regional reach on day two. Global had same-day stories from B.C. (Grace Ke), Saskatoon (Chris Carr) and Winnipeg on the dead soldiers' home communities.
- The seven-death figure appears to predate CBC's 18 Oct entry. Being first with a wrong number earns no credit.
What Global got wrong or missed
- Seven dead, explosion, gas line. All three came from unnamed military sources, were published under "Sources" in the headline, and went abroad. None was corrected with a notice. Two are still live.
- The "preliminary investigation" line. "A preliminary investigation suggests a munition … sparked a fast-moving grass fire, which caused an explosion" names no investigation and no source. It ran in at least three stories.
- The timeline froze on 19 Oct. Global's own "Everything confirmed so far" page still gives 4:00 p.m. as the start and repeats the explosion. A reader landing on it today gets the account Stewart's analysis replaced.
- No use of data. The desk ran no imagery, burn area, weather times or GOES record, although its own investigations unit had published them.
- Accountability by relay. The 22 Oct story frames the right questions (timing, a high-risk month, the guideline). The answers are the officials' answers. We found no desk records requests.
- The 14 Oct fire in the same danger area was not reported. No outlet reported it.
Against other coverage
| Outlet | Main mode | Original evidence | Accuracy record | Versus Global (non-Stewart) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Global (desk and stations) | Breaking news, explainers, regional families, video | Medic's family statement; Rutland's gas doubt | Seven dead, explosion, gas line, all from unnamed sources; no correction notices | — |
| Ashleigh Stewart / Global | Data + documents | Noon Landsat detections; Range Standing Orders | No errors found | Same newsroom; her findings largely unused by the desk |
| CBC | Live blogs, families, video | Planet burn area; burn-unit capacity; families | Seven dead ("CBC News confirms"); gas well raised on air | Same toll error, but avoided the explosion and gas claims in print; broader and better on families |
| CTV | Briefing reports | AGL range, unreachable by crews (22 Oct) | "Explosion" in its own headlines and live blog (17–18 Oct), attributed to Carney; never corrected. One correction notice (wind speed) | Similar mode; no seven-dead or gas claim |
| Canadian Press | Wire explainers, fact check | Few | No toll, explosion or gas errors of its own; small uncorrected errors (Canmore distance, "anti-grenade"); its fact check traced the gas claim back to Global | Did the correcting Global did not |
| Prime Rogue | Modelling + records | Gust time, spread model, gas tests, OCME jurisdiction | Versioned, logged corrections | Tested Global's gas claim against satellite and regulator records; used Global's quotes as inputs |
Scorecard
| Dimension | Global (non-Stewart) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | A− | Story by 21:02 on the night; explainer, victims and Commons stories by 19 Oct; four provinces' stations on air by 19 Oct |
| Accuracy | D | Three false claims on the first night, two still live; timeline stale; later briefing stories clean |
| Originality | C | Medic's family; Rutland's gas doubt; otherwise briefings and wire |
| Sourcing | D | Unnamed military sources behind all three errors; one unsourced "preliminary investigation" line repeated |
| Data, maps, imagery | D | None from the desk; did not carry Stewart's |
| Handling uncertainty | D | Unconfirmed toll and cause in headlines; "explosion" asserted after the commander denied it |
| Families and victims | B | Wong, Farrell, B.C. and Saskatchewan families, the medic, the funeral; less than CBC |
| Accountability follow-through | C− | 22 Oct story asked the right questions and got "a guideline"; no documents of its own; Stewart's not built on |
| Corrections | F | Silent edits; no notice for the toll, the explosion or the gas line |
| Overall | D+ |
Update (26 Oct): CTV's row revised after the full CTV review (BENCH-006): it reported an explosion in its own voice on 17–18 Oct, attributed one to Carney, and has not corrected it.
Update (26 Oct): Canadian Press row revised after the full CP review (BENCH-007).
| Outlet | Originality | Accuracy | Use of data | Handling uncertainty | Overall |

The other outlets' grades are carried over from BENCH-002 and BENCH-003 rev. 2. The Global row replaces BENCH-002's "Global desk (first night)" row. The overall grade is unchanged at D+. The later stories (19–25 Oct) are mostly clean but come from briefings, and they do not make up for errors that were never corrected. BENCH-002 said the first-night gas claim was "later walked back". More precisely, it was removed without a note and then restated alongside the commander's doubt. The seven-death and explosion claims were not walked back.
What a reader should take away
- Don't rely on Global's first-night story or its 19 Oct timeline. Both still carry seven deaths and an explosion, and the timeline still gives 4 p.m. as the start.
- For what happened, read Stewart, not the desk. The fire was burning by noon, the front arrived at 14:50, the gust hit at 15:16 and the run peaked at 15:30. Only her bylines at Global report the timing evidence.
- "Sources" in a headline means unconfirmed. All three of Global's big early claims were attributed that way, and all three were wrong.
- For the families, Global's regional work is worth reading alongside CBC's, especially the medic's story.
What could not be verified
- Original text of the first-night story. We could not open the 17 Oct version. The gas-line wording rests on the Canadian Press fact check's quote, wire pickups (Keystone-SDA, Militarnyi, MyJoyOnline, La Voce di New York) and Bartko's 18 Oct restatement. We do not know when it was removed. We also could not confirm whether the seven-death figure was in the first version or added overnight.
- Archive copies. The Wayback Machine could not be reached from this session.
- Not read: the B.C. soldier, 19-year-old, both vigil and funeral stories, the Manitoba blood story, and all video. Judgements on those rest on headlines and descriptions. Bylines are unknown for those items. The "Hurting" vigil story appears to be Canadian Press copy.
- The tag page's 11 hidden stories would not load. Global Calgary and Global National items may exist among them.
- The "advised not to conduct fire training" video: we could not see whose reports it refers to.
- Broadcast. We watched no Global TV coverage, and no viewer account like the one in BENCH-003 is available.
- BENCH-002 attribution. BENCH-002 lists Stewart as contributing to the 19 Oct timeline. That story's credit line names Previl, Bartko, Semple and CP, not Stewart. Her credit is on the 18 Oct victims story.
- Range 11 (carried from BENCH-002). Prime Rogue attributes the Range 11 identification to Global's standing-orders reporting, which is Stewart's and outside this review. It remains unconfirmed.
