Coverage benchmark — The Canadian Press on CFB Wainwright against other outlets

Roger Wilco Imagery · 26 Oct 2026 · BENCH-007 · Coverage benchmark · Model-generated (LLM); see Method.

Bottom line

The Canadian Press's Wainwright coverage rates B. That matches the preliminary grade in BENCH-002 to BENCH-006, but the row under it changes. CP was the most careful outlet on the facts that went wrong elsewhere. It was not as error-free as "Clean" suggested, and it was less useful on timing and evidence than its accuracy grade implied.

The Canadian Press's Wainwright work

We found 19 CP text items, one video and a set of wire photos. No CP-owned page could be read. thecanadianpressnews.ca lists at least nine Wainwright items, but every fetch of an article there failed at the site, and thecanadianpress.com was outside this session's fetch allowlist. Neither returned a paywall; they were fetch failures. Body text came from member and client reprints: Narcity, CFJC Today (Kamloops), the Penticton Herald, CP24 and Global News. CP updates its stories through the day under one article ID, and the headline often changes, so several entries below list more than one headline for one story. Dates are from CP's "first published" line. Reprint timestamps are inconsistent between sites and are not used to order events.

Read means we read the body text in a reprint. Meta means headline and description only. Headline means title and URL only.

Against the measured record

Measured facts are from RWI SITREP 005 rev. 1 and Prime Rogue's 21–24 Oct series.

Question Measured CP said Verdict
Deaths 4 (official, 18 Oct) No number on 17 Oct; four from Carney's statement on 18 Oct Right; no wrong number found
Explosion None. Rutland, 18 Oct: no explosions; Hanrahan, 22 Oct: "no indication … of any kind" Attributed to MP Lloyd's post (17 Oct); not in CP's voice in any piece read; Hanrahan's denial carried (23 Oct) Right
Gas Not involved Rutland's "does not believe … natural gas infrastructure" (19 Oct); the Fact File traced the gas-well claim to Global (20 Oct); "no gas infrastructure was damaged" (23 Oct) Right
Fire before the run Burning by noon (Landsat 12:17, ~0.44 km²) CAF: "started about 4 p.m." (17 Oct, attributed); "had been burning for a while" and "known well beforehand" (18 Oct); later pieces give no start time Never reported the noon evidence or DND's reported "about noon". Dropped the 4 p.m. start but did not replace it
Wind warning and gust Forecasts at 04:30 and 10:48 called for ~80 km/h gusts; warning 14:14–14:15; front 14:50; gust 82 km/h at 15:16 Gusts "up to 100 kilometres an hour" across the province (17–18 Oct); ECCC alert for gusts up to 90 km/h and a cold front "at the time of the windstorm" (20 Oct) Roughly right, no times. The station gust and the front time were never given
Run GOES 76.5 MW 15:10 → 1,215 MW 15:30 → 336 MW 15:40 Not reported Missed
Contact with troops ~15:19–15:26 (model) "Just before 4 p.m." (Rutland, 23 Oct) Relayed
Spread 5–14 min per km (Prime Rogue model) "30 seconds to a minute" (Rutland, several pieces); "a kilometre in about 30 seconds" (18 Oct rolling file); Beverly: if confirmed, probably the fastest recorded in Canada (20 Oct) Relayed; once narrowed. CP did print the expert's warning that the claim would be a national record
Burned area ~10.7 km² Not reported Missed
Origin Downrange of Range 11 (AGL range), PDA 2 "Anti-grenade launcher range" (23 Oct, inside a quotation); 22 Oct headline: "grenade range" Right range type in the headline; the quotation is probably a transcription error
Exercise Pairs range, not section attack Grenade throwing and a simulated attack by 10 soldiers (18–19 Oct); pairs-range correction carried (23 Oct) Right once corrected
14 Oct fire in PDA 2 Separate ~0.9 km² fire Not reported Missed (as by every outlet)

Seven, explosion, gas: did CP ever report them?

No, in everything we could read.

How CP copy travelled

This is the wire-specific question. The pattern is consistent: outlets that ran CP copy as written carried none of the three big errors, and outlets that blended CP copy with their own sources put them back.

What CP got first

What CP got wrong or missed

Against other coverage

Outlet Main mode Original evidence Accuracy record Versus CP
The Canadian Press Wire: briefings, explainers, fact checks, victims, photos Fact-check tracing; Beverly's record-spread warning; Hiatt family; first-night photos No toll, explosion or gas error; Canmore and "anti-grenade" errors uncorrected; "about 30 seconds" —
Ashleigh Stewart / Global Data + documents Noon Landsat detections; Range Standing Orders No errors found in her bylined pieces Far more original; CP never reported her noon finding
Global (non-Stewart) Breaking news Unnamed military sources Seven dead, explosion, gas line; no notices Put its explosion lead on top of CP's rolling file; CP's Fact File corrected Global's gas claim
CBC Live blogs, families, video Planet burn area; burn-unit capacity "Confirms" seven; gas well on air CBC far broader and had imagery; CP far more careful
CTV Briefings, live blog, regional families, CP wire Fire video; Carignan commitment; gust timing "Explosion" in its own voice and attributed to Carney, uncorrected; one correction notice Much of CTV's text was CP's; CP's versions of the same events had no explosion
The Globe and Mail Briefings, features Memo (jointly); DND noon attribution No errors found in what we could read The Globe more original; ran CP copy; similar care
Prime Rogue Modelling + records Gust time, spread model, gas tests, OCME jurisdiction Versioned, logged corrections Tested what CP relayed: the spread rate and the timeline

Scorecard

Dimension CP Note
Speed A− First-night story on 17 Oct, rolling file from 9 a.m. on 18 Oct, victims that night, timeline 19 Oct, fact check 20 Oct
Accuracy A− Toll, explosion and gas right throughout; Canmore and "anti-grenade" errors; spread claim narrowed once
Originality C+ Fact-check tracing, Beverly's warning, Hiatt family; no documents, data or sources of its own beyond briefings
Sourcing A− Named officials and experts; every early claim attributed; no anonymous sourcing found
Data, maps, imagery D+ No satellite, burned area, weather times or graphics; ECCC alert figure only
Photography B+ On scene the first night (Ulan); memorials and vigil; widely used by CTV and CP24
Handling uncertainty A− No number before Carney's; explosion attributed; explicit list of unknowns; "about 30 seconds" the exception
Families and victims B Profiles of all four, Lykkemark's coach, Hiatt, vigil, blood donors; less depth than CBC or CTV's regional stations
Accountability follow-through C Asked why training continued; relayed the non-answer; did not pursue "burning for a while"
Corrections B− No toll or explosion error to correct; carried Rutland's correction; its own two errors uncorrected; no notices seen
Wire propagation B+ Straight pickups carried no major error; members that added their own sources reintroduced them; CP's own Canmore error went everywhere
Overall B
Outlet Originality Accuracy Use of data Handling uncertainty Overall
Prime Rogue A A− A A A−
Stewart (Global) A A A− A A−
The Globe and Mail B B+ D B+ B (provisional)
Canadian Press C+ A− D+ A− B
CBC News B− C C+ C C+
CTV News C+ C+ D+ C+ C+
Global (non-Stewart) C D D D D+

The other outlets' grades are carried over from BENCH-002 to BENCH-006. CP's overall grade is unchanged from the preliminary B, but its row changes. Accuracy falls from A to A−, for the Canmore and "anti-grenade" errors and the "about 30 seconds" line. Use of data falls from C to D+, because a full reading found no CP data at all. Originality rises from C to C+, for the fact-check work, Beverly's warning and the Hiatt interview. Handling uncertainty rises from B+ to A−, for the first-night attribution and the explainer. The earlier "Clean" holds for the errors that mattered most, but not without exception.
